Lufthansa cancelled 1,000 flights today affecting 140,000 passengers on short and medium haul flights due to a strike by pilots.
The Vereinigung Cockpit pilots’ union is staging a second successive day of action following a walk out yesterday affecting long haul and cargo services.
Further industrial action has also been threatened
Union spokesman Markus Wahl said: “We cannot rule out further strikes this week. Strikes are possible in the following weeks as well.”
The pilots’ 13th strike inside 18 months forced Lufthansa to cancel 84 of about 170 long-haul flights yesterday.
The long-haul network will also see the cancellation of 52 of the 176 long-haul services planned for today, partly because the aircraft concerned are not yet back where they need to be to operate services as scheduled.
Lufthansa said that more than 500 flights will be operated today despite the strike action.
Group carriers Germanwings, Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines are not affected, and will operate as scheduled.
